The Wolf Man

Daniel Baxter September 30, 2019

On a recent visit to my local recycling center, I came across a mysterious book, Esoteric Astrology, which was published in 1913. It was filled with strange diagrams, as well as astrological charts of notable people. This portrait of the Wolf Man was sparked by a lunar consciousness chart.

Prints of this piece are available here!

A Travelog of Egypt

Daniel Baxter August 30, 2019

As an struggling artist, I rarely have the budget to travel across my state, let alone travel the world. With a lean wallet, I must satisfy my wanderlust  through spiritual means, as opposed to physical means.  I utilize maps as canvases in order explore other cultures. Here’s  an imaginary travelog I created on a map of Egypt, incorporating animals, antiquities, and artifacts. I hope you enjoy it! And, If you don’t have the financial means to travel, I hope you can find a spiritual path to experience what other cultures offer!

Signed prints are available here in my Etsy shop!

Harriet Tubman

Daniel Baxter August 20, 2019

I’m thrilled to be included in an group show of Protest Art at TSL (Time and Space Limited) in Hudson, NY, Aug 31st- Sept 29th. America’s morally bankrupt  leadership may have taken Harriet Tubman’s face off the $20 bill, but her contributions to our society are priceless. This piece is graphite on fabric, 22 in by 30 in. The opening is August 31st, 7-9 PM. Hope to see ya there!

Trust Your Fastball

Daniel Baxter August 17, 2019

This illustration for Harvard Magazine accompanies an essay by Chad Oldfather. In 1987, he moved from his small town in Minnesota to attend this hallowed ivy-league institution. Overwhelmed by this daunting new setting, he had to learn how to overcome his feelings of intimidation. As a fan of the Minnesota Twins, Chad found inspiration in an unlikely source: an article about a new pitcher on the team, Willie Banks. He identified with the struggles of this player, and learned (metaphorically speaking) that he just needed to trust throwing his fastball again. In other words, he needed to take chances, let it rip, and let the chips fall where they may. This approach helped propel Chad through a solid college experience, law school, and a successful career in legal academia.

My own daughter, who just graduated from college, is about to embark on her first big job opportunity in Cambridge, MA, and will live a few blocks from Harvard. I will share this essay with her, as a reminder to throw her fastball when need be!

A special thanks to art director, Jennifer Carling, for this inspiring assignment.

Noam Chomsky

Daniel Baxter August 3, 2019

Noam Chomsky is a professor, linguist, philosopher, social critic, and political activist - all wrapped into one person. I drew this portrait of him on a map which includes Lexington, MA (where he called home for many years), and Cambridge, MA (where he taught at MIT for many years). His opinions are both knowledgable and humanist, and I look to for a realistic (and sober) view of world affairs. I admire him greatly.

NY Fed Museum Display

Daniel Baxter July 26, 2019

I had the pleasure of collaborating with an amazing designer, Megan Mardiney, in creating a this ambitious map installation. It’s located in the museum at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, 33 Liberty St., Manhattan. The NY Fed helps implement US monetary policy.

This museum educates people about the role of the Federal Reserve, as well as how our economy functions. The vignettes on this map represent various industries, landmarks and animals of the region. You can read more about my process of making this map here. Enormous thanks to Megan and Kerwin Adduru, for including me in this wonderful project.

Meadowbrook Moose

Daniel Baxter July 24, 2019

Here’s a fun project for the Meadowbrook School in Weston, Massachusetts. I was asked to create a cut-out doll for a brochure which promotes this excellent K-8 institution’s annual fund drive. It depicts their mascot, the Meadowbrook Moose, along with cut-out accessories which he/she/they can be outfitted with - showing school pride. As a moose lover, I had a blast designing this character, along with the little dress-up elements. Special thanks to fantastic designer and longtime collaborator, Dan Beard, for this fantastic assignment.

W.H. Auden

Daniel Baxter July 10, 2019

Here's a portrait of W.H. Auden, who is regarded as one of England's greatest poets. I drew him on a parking map of York, where he was born. Much like the roads depicted on this map, I imagine the lines on his face would lead us on some truly lyrical adventures.

Indigenous peoples

Daniel Baxter June 17, 2019

I recently read a book called Sapiens, by Yuval Noah Harari. In it, one concept he discussed is how borders of countries are just artificial constructs. They don’t exist unless enough people are convinced that really they do exist. Looking at an old map of North America, I kept thinking of all the indigenous peoples inhabiting this space long before European colonization set in. From the Inuits, to the Cree, to the Hopi (and on and on), this is a little tribute to the native tribes of this land.

I Feel Pretty

Daniel Baxter June 4, 2019

This drawing was sparked by a piece of sheet music I found at my local recycling center. No doubt, West Side Story is one of the greatest musicals of time. This portrait portrays Maria (as played by Natalie Wood in the film version), who coveys this timeless song so beautifully. Dear viewer, I hope you're feeling pretty today:-)

Margaret Atwood

Daniel Baxter May 27, 2019

Spawned in the creative wellspring of Ontario waters, a literary current flowed down to southern daughters. Spreading into bible-belt tributaries, this handmaid’s tale bled into harsh realities. When fiction dilutes into fact, Margaret Atwood foresaw these repressive acts.

Tiger Confessions

Daniel Baxter May 19, 2019

Here's a new piece for Princeton Alumni Weekly. It accompanies a story about a private Facebook group for Princeton students,  Tiger Confessions. In this group, students can anonymously express thoughts they're uncomfortable  expressing in person to others. These confessions can run the spectrum from happy, sad, embarrassing, to just plain humorous. In a recent post, a student discussed committing suicide, which caught the attention of the school administration. They reinforced the idea that, while it is worthy to have forum such as this, there are mental health professionals available, who can help address difficult issues and emotions which students confront.

John F Kennedy

Daniel Baxter May 16, 2019

This portrait of President John F Kennedy was sparked by a line from a famous speech he gave to 450,000 West Germans, "Ich bin ein Berliner" ( I am a Berliner). This 1963 speech was delivered during the cold war, bringing comfort to West Berliners who feared an East German occupation.
